Real CTR Per Ad Postion Data

I like looking @ data.  If you read this then this may interest you.  All over the internet, you will see the reports of Click Through Rates per ad position: #1 is twice as much as #2 and so on.  I figured I’d to a quick SQL query of my data and see where I stood.  Here you see the CTR for Yahoo and MSN #1’s are 4% and 3.5% (I guess I fail at google :) ).  The numbers speak for themselves. I included the impressions so you would get an idea of the statistical accuracy (more impressions = more accurate)

WTF is up with Google you may ask? The past few months I have pretty much ignored google and have been focusing on everyone but them.  (Yahoo, MSN, and bunches of other 2nd tier networks — I would like to say that this was mostly so I would be better prepared for my speaking topic (PPC engines that work) at Affiliate Summit East — and that is partially true, but really I just haven’t been working Google over much.  Apparently I need to get on the ball.  Don’t worry though,  Amit will be giving a great presentation on working Google so that topic is going to be covered.

Some interesting things about this data.  Some of the really low ranks have a higher CTR then you would think. (See position 25 and 30 on yahoo)  Yahoo seems to give you a higher CTR them MSN in general.  But to be fair I don’t have the exact same ads in all three ad networks.

I’ll Wear Your SWAG @ ASE

Want me to wear your shirt/cap/pants/whatever when I am speaking at affiliate summit east in a few weeks?  Contact me and let me know what you have in mind.  As long as it is not too ridiculous and you can get it to me fast enough I’ll be sure to wear it that Sunday.  In fact, if you like I can wear something every day.

I’ll be there 8/10 -> 8/12 (but I do have to leave early to catch my flight home — babysitter starts school 8/13)

I am 6′6″ 230 lbs and stick out in a crowd pretty bad (in a good way).  People will definitely see your swag.  I’d go for golf shirts over t-shirts but I can be flexible. Blinking LED’s are acceptable as well.

Contact me for shipping details and what you would like.

Shirt Size: XXL (XL in T-Shirts will do)
Pant Size: 36 38 waist and 36 length

Am I charging for this? Not this year. If it is really successful I would consider donating to a worthy cause in return.

Edit: I changed my waist size.  Aparently I am getting fat. ;)

Thats Lobstertainment

More diving.  3 dives a day for past week.  Here is a video of a lobster we found. (Video was not taken by me, I just put it together and uploaded it to youtube)

Been Diving Past 2 Days..

3 Dives a day for past 2 days with more to come.  One of the people in our group shot some videos that I put together real quick between dives.  Turtles FTW…

So far we have seen barracuda, sharks, turtles, eels, rays and lots of other smaller things.

Diving Looks Canceled

Well it definitely looks like diving in the morning is canceled, probably all day tomorrow…  We will have to play it by ear.  But at least we got here before they stopped the planes.  We were delayed by an hour for weather and travel for tomorrow looks iffy for anyone else who wants to fly in tomorrow.  Here is how it looks at the moment…

It should pass us before it becomes a major storm.  And then we will have clear skies the rest of the week…

First Class Snacks…

I took Tuesdee on her first, first class flight. Fancy food and all that.

I feel like John Chow posting food pics, but here ya go.

Next stop, Little Cayman.

Email Answers: Does The “Rule of 30″ apply to impressions?

Cache (yeah that is his real name.. I think ;) ) wrote me an email:

Hey John – we are doing some ads and testing things. You seem to be a guru in this area, I wondered if you had an idea on this question.

I read a good article that stated statistically speaking 30 responses under the exact same conditions is accurate + or – 5%. This helps a lot to know statistically if we had the same keyword same add 30 people came to the landing page none converted then we try something else. I have another question and wasn’t sure if you knew the answer. I would like to know statistically how many impressions on a specific keyword/ad copy combo before it is unlikely to change. So if we don’t get 30 clicks how long do we wait before we change. I would think there is a similar statistic saying so many impressions under the same criteria means you will continue to get the same response. If we could know that then we know when to change things up so we aren’t moving to quick or too late. I am searching for an answer to this question if you can help that would be great.

To summarize:
If your landing page gets 30+ hits and no conversions you really need to change something (usually the landing page). I’d say that is fair.
As far as impressions go…. What I like to do is take my ads and keywords and split them apart in high CTR campaigns and low CTR campaigns. When I first start a campaign I just don’t know yet, but over time I get a good idea of CTR and move the higher CTR adgroups together in their own campaign.

If you are getting zero impressions but a high position then the keyword you have just doesn’t have much traffic. Leave it alone for a while.
If you are getting lots of impressions but a low ranking (say 10 or so) then you have a keyword that will work, but you really should fix your adcopy and/or raise your bids. Back to the original question….

So if we don’t get 30 clicks [on an ad] how long do we wait before we change.

My answer: You should be split testing with multiple ads (usually two). Then you use the “rule of 30″ for picking which ad you should replace with a new ad, then you wait for 30 more clicks on the ad and replace the ad with the lowest profit margin. Using this tactic over time will always yield good results over the long term.

PS: You should also be split testing your landing pages.

Update From My Comment:
“…if you are really looking for a target number. Try it this way.

1) What is your target CTR? Lets go with 1% (I see everything from .00% to 60+% CTR on ads). I would say take the average CTR across your similar ads/keywords as a baseline.
2) At a 1% CTR you would need 3000 impressions to get 30 clicks. Using the 33% rule take 1/3 of that and you get your answer. 1000 impressions and you know you probably have a dud.
3) A little Algebra and we have a formula for you.
Target impressions before it is likely a dud = Target CTR% / 10

Example 1:
Your CTR rate should be 1% so you if you get over 1000 impressions then you will never meet 1% CTR., Change something.

Example 2:
Your CTR rate should be 3% so you if you get over 333 impressions then you will never meet 3% CTR., Change something.

Example 3:
Your CTR rate should be .02% so you if you get over 50,000 impressions then you will never meet .02% CTR., Change something.”

Dofollow links on Twitter.

If you use twitter you know it has high PR and bots/spammers have been trying different things lately.

I noticed on twitter that the links on my current is a dofollow link, while anything in the status column is nofollow.

interesting...

interesting...

I checked the spammer’s pages and couldnt see any dofollow links but maybe there is some hidden page I don’t know about that shows dofollow.  One has to wonder, why every outgoing link on twitter is nofollow but one. Did they just miss it or is it intentional?  Are people exploiting it?-probably.

This is just a heads up, it will probably eventually become nofollow unless the twitter folk did it intentionally.

Edit: As far as I can tell you only see this dofollow link if you are logged in, but I am not 100% certain on that.

iPhone 3G, no line wait easy as pie

I had breakfast at IHOP with my daughter.  Afterwards we stopped by the ATT store to see how bad it was.  The place was busy but there was no line.  I wasn’t really planning on buying an iPhone 3g and we went to play with the iPhone 3g display models.  It does feel amazing good in your hands.  (I have had several Windows Mobile cellphones, and while they could do cool things they never, ever felt good in your hands).  While we were playing with the phones one of the managers asked me if I needed anything, nah.. we are just looking, but I did ask if they actually had any iPhones in stock since the place seemed a little slow.  He said they have just barely gotten some in a few minutes ago.  I turned around and someone must have told because the store was suddenly packed with about 40-50 people behind me.  Here I am just playing with the phone with zero plans to buy one and 50 people behind me chompin’ at the bit for a chance to be near the thing…  I figured.  Sure I’ll buy the white 16g one.  If I don’t like it, I can take it back in a few days and only have to pay 10% restocking.  I’ll pay $30ish to try it for a week or so.

I kept my current phone since it does video and WAY better GPS and has lots more Bluetooth features enabled and live TV and so on…  All pics were taken with my Sanyo M1  (videos too)

This is Dave checking me out.  (Or processing my purchase– however you want to say it)

And this video contains me on a VERY BAD HAIR DAY telling you how to get an iPhone 3g with no wait in line.

It should be noted that as I was shooting these videos with my other Cell Phone, Dave stopped trying to tell me that the iPhone was better then air :)   Ok ok.. he never really said that, but like I said.. the iPhone is really close, but not quite there yet…

I am off to develop a few apps for it and see how that goes.

A solution to Macbook Pro’s crapping out on standby/suspend

Looks like I have finally found a solution to my Macbook Pro always crashing on suspend/standby.  Before my solution was to have it auto hibernate via setting permanent hibernate via the console.  That solution stopped working a few days ago.  (Probably some new patch from Apple that screwed it up — Note: I almost typed Microsoft…)  So I did some research.  Turns out that if you unplug the Macbook from power and *any* perhipherals (usb, firewire, anything) first (and you get rid of the hibernat settings you had) then it goes into standby very happily and wakes up in about a sec when you open the lid.  Looks like I won’t be permabooting in XP on this puppy for now.

Summary: Unplug EVERYTHING, including power from the laptop before you close the lid and you should be fine.
